This work presents the hardware and firmware validation of a smart hybrid inverter using a Hardware-In-the-Loop (HIL) scheme together with a digital signal controller (DSC) development kit. All the inverter hardware, external sources and loads are modeled in the HIL ecosystem. This real-time domain emulation (RTDE) is then interfaced with the development kit using the HIL analog and digital inputs and outputs plus an interface card. Experimental results of the system are compared with the HIL simulation, demonstrating that it is possible to validate a large portion of the system, including the firmware, before developing the hardware itself. Finally, a few shortcomings of the HIL platform are presented and analyzed.
